New Artist! Emma Frances Grant

Emma Frances Grant

Today is a special day! I am so excited to introduce our newest artist – Emma Frances Grant. Emma is based in Hertfordshire, UK, and works mostly with gouache before adding finishing touches to her artwork digitally. She has a prolific history in greetings-card design having previously worked as Senior Designer for Woodmansterne, UK.

I asked Emma what made her want to become an artist:

“It’s a cliché to say but I’ve always loved drawing. I used to draw on the back of rolls of wallpaper we had lying around because my Mum said we kept running out of paper! I think I first realised it could be a job when my Nana once said (when I was very small), ‘you could charge people for these paintings one day!’ And so I began to write ‘1p’ at the top of every drawing as a kid.”

How did you find your style?

“I think it naturally comes with time. I feel it’s important to keep experimenting with different mediums and techniques. My style is generally quite loose and fluid with paint, but lately I have been enjoying drawing with a calligraphy pen which is anything but! I’m enjoying the combination. My work is often a mixture of mediums.”

Has it changed since you started?

“I think it has certainly developed and become more closely aligned to my artistic preferences, but things like my love of colour and detail has remained constant.”

Tell us about yourself, what makes you ‘tick’?

“I like delving into the unknown and things we don't fully understand: space, spirituality and animals all fascinate me. I love antiques and looking towards the stories of the past. I love seeing the ‘artist’ in the work; all the brushstrokes, all the mistakes. And not forgetting to be playful and have a sense of humour along the way.”

Which kind of work do you enjoy doing the most?

“Subject wise, anything to do with the animal kingdom. It’s an endless resource and it’s fascinating, whilst researching them, discovering all sorts of unusual facts.”

Do you have a favourite process?

“I usually do a quick thumbnail sketch for an idea then enjoy painting with a big messy palette before putting together the final constructed piece digitally. It feels a bit like a jigsaw and I like to give myself the freedom to play.”

A highly experienced and versatile designer - we are already working on exciting projects together.
