For our second ‘Day in the Life of…’ feature, we pay a visit to our artist Kate Heiss, whose studio is brimful of print-making tools and equipment. Kate is a British Printmaker who uses lino-cutting and screen-printing techniques. With Kate's skill of draughtsmanship and sense of colour, it's no surprise clients love her work.

Read on for an insight into Kate’s daily life!

How do you kickstart your day?

“As I work from home I usually go for a brisk walk over the fields once the children have left for school. I call it my commute. It clears my head and sets me up for the rest of the day’s tasks.”

Describe your working environment – what sights, sounds & smells are there?

”My studio is opposite my house overlooking my allotment, so I have a lovely view of lots of vegetables, fruit, flowers and weeds growing. I also can watch all the birds, insects and the occasional Muntjac who visit to feast on the bountiful produce.

”The summer flowers have been amazing as I spent a lot of time in the garden during lockdown and the wildlife is really benefiting from my efforts.”

What are the biggest challenges you face on a day to day basis?

“I find it hard to self motivate sometimes and it can get lonely working alone in the studio.”

What radio station/podcast/audiobooks do you listen to while you work?

“I like to listen to the radio but I have also recently been enjoying the Louis Theroux podcasts, Fearne Cotton’s Happy Place, Gardeners Question Time and Old Desert Island Discs.”

What makes you smile throughout the day?

“Seeing the birds hop on to my windowsill and see them glance at me in the studio. The moment our eyes meet always makes me smile.”

What keeps you motivated throughout the day?

“I make a lot of lists! I like the satisfaction of crossing tasks off as I complete them. I usually try to give myself a daily deadline for things.”

How do you wind down at the end of a long day?

“A big cup of tea and feet up on the sofa.”

What do you enjoy doing outside of work? What are your hobbies?

“I love going on bike rides, countryside walks and birdwatching. I also love baking when I have the time.”
