A Day in the Life of Catherine Rowe

Catherine Rowe

Catherine Rowe is a British designer of luxury and unique wares for the home. Inspired largely by her love of nature and wildlife, Catherine's designs are traditional and classic with a contemporary, playful twist.

All of Catherine's designs are produced in her studio in Chichester, West Sussex, before being expertly and carefully made into products such as wallpaper, fabric, scarves and cushions.

This week I'm taking a look into Catherine's working process and day-to-day life as a professional artist.

How do you kickstart your day?

“The day is always started with a delectable frothy coffee made by yours truly, then a walk around our beautiful local park with the hound. If I feel like being a good human I’ll follow this with some yoga!”

Describe your working environment – what sights & sounds are there?

“My studio is in our house and we live on a quiet terraced road north of the city. I have a view of the pretty colourful terraced houses and I’m always in the company of squawking sea gulls!!”

What are the biggest challenges you face on a day to day basis?

“It has taken a long time to become disciplined enough to work both at home and for myself, by myself. My biggest challenge is distractions!! Especially if it’s a nice day… But the beauty of working for myself is I can make the hours up wherever I like if I do feel like popping into town, or to the beach…”

What radio station/podcast/audiobooks do you listen to while you work?

“I absolutely rinse audiobooks and podcasts whilst I’m working! Too many to list, but right now I’m obsessed with a podcast called the Powerful Truth Angels… in short, it’s two friends talking about nothing and everything. I just love listening to podcasts and audiobooks which make me laugh and feel like I’m in the company of friends.”

What makes you smile throughout the day?

“The above! And also my naughty Greek rescue dog and grumpy persian cat.”

What keeps you motivated throughout the day?

“The hustle!! I’m driven by knowing I rely on myself and my talents and abilities to pay the bills and make wonderful things which make people smile.”

How do you wind down at the end of a long day?

“We’re fortunate enough to live right next to the coast so I love going down to the beach when it’s nice and quiet in the evenings, at the moment I’ve been swimming at sunset - it’s incredible! A trip to our beautiful local pub by the park never goes amiss either!”

What do you enjoy doing outside of work? What are your hobbies?

“I picked up rollerskating during lockdown and I am totally hooked. It’s the most fun, freeing feeling – if not a bit terrifying at times!”

Catherine writes: “I adore rich, opulent patterns, fabrics and decor. This combined with my love of animal & botanical form really is the life-blood of what I do. Drawing for me is a compulsion and I have been doing it for as long as I can think of.”
